INDEPENDENT PROJECT // FALL 2015 - FALL 2016

Watch the video of our story here!

The Hangout is a student-designed outdoor learning space at Rice University: a network poles and movable hammocks meant to empower users to shape their environment. The space can become an outdoor classroom, a group study area, or a reading spot. It is a temporary installation that came from the bi-annual Mini-Charrette design competition that three friends and I organized when we realized we needed more outdoor learning spaces on campus. The Hangout is the second student-designed project to be built on Rice’s campus.

I gained pragmatic knowledge about fabrication and fundraising during the year long period between the competition and construction. My favorite part about the process was being able to pull together the efforts of the Rice grounds office, the architecture school’s staff, faculty mentors, and other student-designers. The project team of eight loosely divided up roles and I acted as project manager. We arranged meetings with consultants to make the project come to life, and are still strategizing in design to keep the project up beyond its original two year fate.
